Local feature descriptors have been a key element and enhancer for over twenty years for many computer vision tasks, such as image matching, image retrieval, 3d reconstruction, depth estimation, motion estimation, object identification, etc.
In the talk I’ll cover classical and deep network approaches, state-of-the-art solutions, benchmarks and examples of practical applications of local feature descriptors. For example, how local feature descriptors are useful for image matching under severe viewpoint/illumination changes, how image search worked before deep networks era, how they are used to “build Rome in a day” or in winner solutions for Google Landmark Retrieval challenge.
