WSD KYIV: EPAM backed brilliant conference on Web-Standards

Web Standards Days isn’t a typical Programming conference. First of all, it is free. Secondly it’s awesome. For the last 6 years, Kyiv, Minsk, Moscow and Saint-Petersburg have hosted the event and invited talented speakers from various countries. No wonder, EPAM supported the conference four times in Ukraine and Belarus. This November participants came together in Kyiv.

There was a full house at Web Standards Days in Kyiv, a conference co-organized by EPAM and Opera, a Norway-based company that makes well-known Opera browsers. Actually, it is for the 4th time EPAM has supported this event in Ukraine and Belarus for the last several years.

Web Standards Days, or just simply WSD, is dedicated to front-end development and web-standards. Unsurprisingly, EPAM has plenty of projects with top front-end and Java-Script devs. And it is events like WSD that help specialists enhance their expertise and provide a chance for talented speakers to share their experience.

This kind of conferences help lads to get out of their narrow project needs for a while and think outside the box. That’s important because modern front-end technology develops quickly and one has to keep up with its pace in order to provide the best solution for the customer. And of course, such events are a great opportunity to meet new people and make friends with talented speakers or smart attendees.

The conference kicked off with a really cool presentation by Yuri Tkachenko ‘CSS is still awesome’. He covered the topic of CSS updates, and the importance of knowing the standards.

Igor Kononuchenko spoke about Grammarly, the engine that helps finding mistakes in texts of users and he also touched the upcoming updates for the standard. See more in his presentation ‘Сontenteditable’.

Sergey Syrkin shared his vision about React and BEM and whether it is possible to make them compatible.

EPAMer Ihor Zenich also covered BEM topic with some hilarious slides. Check out this piece from Ihor.

Then Vadym Makeyev tried to explain why web applications look so bad on a mobile, how to change this and also covered the way to install web applications for your home screen in the newest versions of Opera and Google Chrome.

Anton Nemtsev came up with some ideas of overcoming bad internet connection, and 4G connection in particular, and also of how to avoid losing data during those bad connection sessions.

Front-enders nowadays got so deep into programming that they started to forget the basics of Typography. Roman Prudnikov explained how to cope with this problem in his presentation.

Sketch editor is a very valuable tool for designers. EPAMers Artem Svitelskyi and Artem Prokhatskyi shared their experience of using it for project needs in their keynote “Sketch and frontend development”. Some useful advice on how to establish communication between developers and designers is in there as well.

Mikhail Bondarchuk went deep in his visual presentation and tried to shed some light on the way a web-developer thinks.

Conference wasn’t over till the speech of Andriy Listochkin about JavaScript in Ukraine. Lots of interesting info about past and future meet-ups of the community across the country.

Vadym Makeyev, one of the organizers of the conference said that WSD community is always open to cooperation, new ideas and talented speakers.
