A confusion is that we have two „haves” in English: one have for possession (I have a book.) and the other have as part of a verb to talk about the past (I have eaten.)Possession have:
„I don’t have a book” and „I haven’t a book” are both „correct” (as are „Do you have a book?” and „Have you a book?”, but in American English people almost always use „do” and „don’t”, and almost never say it the second way.
Verb part have:
„I haven’t eaten” and „Have you eaten?” are the only correct ways; never „I don’t have eaten.”
