you missed the point, pal. we discuss psychological aspects of the work, not work itself or if having psychological support is left-wing political views. Please, do not distort.
company pays money for work done, correct, but work doesn’t include to endure bullying, mobbing, passive aggression, gaslighting, victimblaming etc.
is it a suggestion?
even 1000 or 10 000 votes is not representative enough as readiness to support doesn’t mean qualified support. And as I told already in one of my responses here, amateur or ignorant persons in psychology/psychiatry can bring more harm then benefit.
All in all it is responsibility of a person who seeks for support to see and distinguish if support provided by that or the other colleague (or even psychology specialist) is appropriate for him/her.
There exists extreme conditions like personality disorders caused by prolong trauma caused by abuse and violence in a family where person grew up. And unfortunately such case are not rare: from 10% to 40% of population in a world depending on a region where you’ve grown up suffer from personality disorders.
Among those personality disorders there are two so called “bad boys” personality disorders: narcissistic and antisocial (psychopathy and sociopathy) which do not suffer themselves but cause suffering of surrounding people. As I mentioned earlier, ANY communication with people with these disorders has a form of narcissistic abuse. Being ale to recognize them and keep yourself as distant as possible from such people would help you very much in saving you mental health, no jokes.
When in depression or in other hard life conditions, you productivity drops down. It is hard not to notice. In companies with HRBPs/HRPPs it is recommended to turn to them when you feel burned out, neither to colleagues nor to manager. Moreover, HRBPs/HRPP very often have degree in psychology. And then you can ask HRPP/HRBP to talk to you manager and to help to explain you condition. But noone can guarantee that customer wouldn’t ask your manager to discharge you from the project due to your lag in performance and customer doesn’t want to understand the causes of you lags.
In my opinion in large companies employees should find good HRBP/HRPP themselves and should establish good relationships with them. Yes, like in real life, you should make an effort to find good specialist whom you can trust to.
In small companies you most often should rely on yourself only and hence should find good psychologist/other support outside of the company.
I never said “idea is shitty, let’s drop it”, it is you projection and interpretation. I emphasize the importance of turning to well trained specialist in case of psychological or psyche problems and not to experiment with absolutely unprepared colleagues. As your mental health and your career can be destroyed by amateurs or ignorant persons in psychology/psychiatry .
numbers and statistics based on a set of 48 people is way not representative. besides, looking up a psychologist which would help you is a rather long process. And expecting that “active listening” by colleagues which are not well prepared or are not prepared at all from psychological perspective can be helpful is very naive. Indeed it can bring even more harm than benefit.
It is very important to raise awareness about psychology and psychiatry among people as it really increases quality of life as you start to understand causes and effects of different psychological and psyche aspects of health and thus can take correct decisions. But it is very important to turn to a specialist first in case of psyche or psychological problems or at least to online communities of psychological support first, not to colleagues or managers. As still psyche or psychological problems have lots myths and stigmas around them.
Just listening to someone’s life troubles neither hurts nor causes trauma. of course it can cause intensive feelings in highly sensitive people which in their turn can cause retraumatization — that is why it is highly recommended to conduct any psychological or near-psychological events either directly by well trained specialists or with support of such a specialists (i.e. “active listener” himself/herself is attending psychologist/psychological courses and thus can rely on professional psychological support after a session of “active listening”).
Trauma can be directly causes by prolonged (about half of a year or longer) abusive communication: bullying, mobbing, passive aggression, gaslighting, victimblaming...
It is not rare case that you might work directly with a person with either narcissistic personality disorder or antisocial personality disorder (psychopath or sociopath). ANY communication with people with these personality disorders always has a form of narcissistic abuse. Narcissistic abuse leads to learned helplessness which in its turn causes depression and anxiety, and untreated depression and anxiety lead to brain damage.
Each person which wants to build safe relationships and wants to avoid becoming an abuser or being involved into relations with abuser should know and understand this chain of causes and effects.
